Plantation Wooden Shutters and Curtains?

A question we are often asked at The California Shutter & Blind Company is

"can I have plantation shutters and curtains on the same window?"

At the risk of sitting on the fence we say

"It all depends on personal taste and your window"!

Most customers will choose to have wooden shutters only and not have curtains on the window. This is especially true if customers select either full height shutters or tier on tier shutters. Covering the whole window with either full height shutters or tier on tier / double hung shutter panels has the effect of covering most of the glazed area of the window. If shutters are installed on bay windows, think about it - the shutters are not only on 1 window, but 3 windows and therefore you don't want to be drowning the window by making it look too busy with both shutters and curtains.

However bay window shutters can be complimented by curtains if the window and room decor lends itself to this style. If you have a more traditional / regnecy type style and decor preference and your bay windows are tall then shutters and curtains can look stunning. However if you are looking for a more contemporary style and you are buying shutters because you want cleaner lines and a more simple look, then curtains could spoil the look you are striving for.

The most effective use of shutters and curtains combined is when you have half height shutters (or cafe style shutters as they are also known) and curtains. Half height shutters or cafe style shutters are often chosen not only for their look within the room but most often for customers to gain privacy on the lower half of their windows. Victorian bay windows as seen on many properties in London, Glasgow or Brighton are tall in height. Shutters covering just the lower section of the window are great for privacy but can leave the room feeling cold in the window. With no shutter panels on the top section of the window, in the summer this is great. It's nice to look out above the top shutters and see blue sky and the night light until 10pm. However when it's a miserable night in the middle of January and you have a big black hole through the shutter-less top section, it can leave the room  little bleak. Having curtains, even make from silk or a soft light fabric, means you can pull the curtains closed over and make the room feel warmer and more snug

As always, Murray Clark, Director of The California Company urges all customers looking for shutters design advice to contact us. Send a photo asking which design of shutters would look best in your home and The California Company Team would be happy to help!
